In a display of skill and camaraderie, crews from 11 utilities across the western United States converged on Sun Valley for the annual Lineman’s Rodeo. Hosted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power on May 18, this electrifying event showcased the prowess of electric utility workers in a series of challenges. From navigating intricate tasks to emphasizing safety protocols, over 3,000 spectators witnessed the dedication and expertise of these lineworkers firsthand. The event also provided a platform for individuals interested in pursuing careers as lineworkers, Electric Distribution Mechanics (EDMs), or exploring other utility roles at LADWP.
Electrifying Challenges and Camaraderie
In collaboration with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 18, the Lineman’s Rodeo showcased a series of timed competitions including Pole Climbing, Hurtman Rescue, and Hot Sticking. These challenges, reminiscent of the daily tasks of LADWP utility crews, provided spectators and potential future electric distribution mechanics with a firsthand look into the demands of keeping the lights on for LADWP’s four million residents. Simon Zewdu, LADWP Senior Assistant General Manager of Power Systems, expressed the event's significance, highlighting it as a cherished occasion to honor the teamwork and skills of lineworkers while emphasizing the importance of safety and efficiency in their work.
Unity and Excellence in Action
Gus Corona, Business Manager of IBEW Local 18, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the event, underscoring the partnership between the Department and the union. This occasion not only allows members to demonstrate their daily tasks to their families but also presents an opportunity to showcase their skills against other utilities, solidifying their reputation as industry leaders. Despite facing formidable competition from 30 journeyman teams and 38 apprentice lineman teams, LADWP crews demonstrated their exceptional capabilities. Evan Pierre secured the first-place position, with Benjamin Chapman following closely in second in the Apprentice Category. Pierre also clinched second place in the Written Test competition, while Tyler Scurria earned third place in Hurtman Rescue and second place in the Pole Climb competitions, highlighting LADWP's commitment to excellence across various disciplines.
Beyond the Competition: A Day of Exploration and Fun
While the competition took center stage, the event offered a plethora of activities for the approximately 3,500-strong crowd. LADWP went beyond showcasing their skills on the field by providing career information to those interested in joining the department, amplifying the event's impact as a recruitment platform. Attendees also had the opportunity to browse through vendors offering industry supplies and equipment. Family-friendly attractions, including a petting zoo and a science center with engaging activities tailored for school-aged children, added to the festive atmosphere. Reflecting on the event, LADWP Electric Distribution Mechanic Trainee (EDMT) Robert Flores expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the chance to demonstrate his abilities as a new apprentice in a different setting. The winners of this event are slated to advance to the prestigious International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas, scheduled for this October, underscoring the significance of this local competition on a global stage.
