Mainstream media, like CNN, MSNBC and Rachel Maddow, were blindsided when the Mueller Report came out—and said Trump did not collude with Russia to win the election. How did they get Russiagate so wrong for so long? And will they face a reckoning?

The Release of the Mueller Report

The Department of Justice released Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s full report on April 18.

The report is lightly redacted to comply with the law, according to Attorney General William Barr.

Robert Mueller investigated Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also investigated allegations that President Donald Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to win the election.

Attorney General William Barr said Mueller was not able to establish that anyone from President Trump’s campaign, or Trump himself, conspired or cooperated with Russia.

For two years the mainstream media waited for Mueller to expose President Trump. Now it’s over, and it turns out there was no collusion with Russia.

The media plays an important role in our democracy, so important that it’s referred to as the “fourth estate,” putting it up there with the three branches of government.

But what happens when the media gets it wrong? A clear example of this is the Trump-Russia collusion story. Many prominent websites, newspapers, and TV shows led the public to believe that Trump colluded with Russia to win the presidency, even when they couldn’t verify it.
