Italy Declares State of Emergency in Venice After Second Worst Flood Ever Recorded 

In Italy this Thursday, the lagoon city of Venice declared a state of emergency.  After a hurricane-force storm that merged with a high tide on Nov 12, Venice was hit with catastrophic flooding.  The floodwater even entered St. Mark’s Basilica and submerged town squares. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte described the floods as ‘ a blow to the heart of the country’.  On Tuesday a hurricane-like storm that coincided with a full moon, created the second-worst flooding ever recorded in Venice.  85% of the city was flooded with water levels reaching 6 feet above sea level. Another high wave of water hit the city again on Wednesday.

In an article from AFP, it said, “ Venetians woke Wednesday to devastating scenes after the highest tide in 50 years washed through the historic city beaching  gondolas, trashing hotels and sending tourists fleeing.” The high waters inundated the crypt beneath St Mark’s Basilica for the second time in history. One Venetian shop owner told AFP. “ It was apocalyptic enough to give you goosebumps. The storm was so bad it broke the marble flood barrier.”

U.S. born Alabama woman who joined ISIS is not an American citizen, Judge rules 

Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton dismissed a lawsuit brought by the family of Hoda Muthana, an American born woman who traveled to Syria to join ISIS, concluding that she is not a U.S. citizen.  Judge Walton, in addition to dismissing the lawsuit, also ruled that Ali Muthana, Hoda’s father who formerly represented Yemen in the United Nations is still a diplomat, The rule of law does stipulate that children born to diplomats are not granted automatic citizenship in the U.S.

Muthana, 25 currently lives with her 2 yr old son in a refugee camp in Syria and has since denounced her ties to the terrorist group.  She and her child were moved from the ROJ refugee camp after receiving death threats from ISIS supporters.  In 2014  Hoda left college and her home in Alabama after being radicalized by ISIS online. She became a member and promoted ISIS ideology and even called for Muslims to carry out attacks in America such as drive-by shootings and even promoted attempts to assassinate former President Barack Obama.  While in Syria she had a child with an ISIS fighter who was later killed. The State Dept said no to her original request to return with her child to America and President Trump even issued an order to Sec. of State Mike Pompeo to not let her in the country.

CIGARETTE SMOKING AMONG U.S. ADULTS DROPS TO ALL TIME LOW

In a recent statement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC),  shows that the number of adult smokers in the United States has hit an all-time low of 13.7% in 2018.  The CDC said, “ A decline of approximately two-thirds in the more than 50 years  since the first Surgeon General’s report warned of the health consequences of smoking.”  CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield commented, “ This marked decline in cigarette smoking is the achievement of a consistent and coordinated effort by the public health community and our many partners.”

In its report, the CDC noted that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States today. “ Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure.”  It added that quitting smoking at any age is beneficial to an individual’s overall health.

At a ceremony at the opening of the new Angel Watch Center located in Fairfax, Virginia, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE) revealed that Homeland Security Investigations, HSI, made 3,771 criminal arrests relating to child exploitation in 2019.  This marked an 18% increase from the previous year. HSI increasingly has cracked down on child sex exploitation and child sex tourism.  The new Angel Watch Center will focus its work on alerting foreign governments of incoming sexual predators.

HSI is the investigative unit of ICE.   It announced that it has initiated 4,224 child exploitation cases during 2019 and rescued 1,066 victims. Matthew Albence, acting ICE Director said Thursday at the facility’s grand opening,  “Law enforcement is most effective when it is carried out in partnership. When International Megan’s Law was signed by the President in 2016, it signaled the United State’s firm commitment to working closely in collaboration with the international community to identify and target convicted child sex offenders traveling to foreign countries.”  One HSI agent said, “ those who seek to harm  children  should consider this a warning.”
