500K PG&E Customers May Lose Power as San Jose Revolts With Buyout Proposal
Pacific Gas and Electric or PG&E, started notifying their customers on Monday that they would be shutting off the power again to 16 counties in the Sierra Foothills and the North San Francisco Bay Area. This will be done to prevent wildfires says the electric companies. The potential new power outage will impact up to 500,000 people. The blackouts would last for at least 48 hours. This is in response to weather forecasts that predict high winds of up to 60 mph that may hit the area that could blow branches and debris onto power lines or topple them thus sparking wildfires.
Some opposition and criticism from citizens over the possibility of more mandatory power outages recently came from San Jose’s Mayor Sam Liccardo who said Monday that his city is considering some options. One option includes buying out PG&E and turning it into a non-profit co-op to better serve the electricity needs of its constituents. This according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Using a quote from the movie ‘Chariots of Fire’, Mayor Liccardo said, “ I’ve seen better-organized riots.”
Homeland Security to Collect DNA of Illegal Immigrants at Border
The Department of Homeland Security will start collecting DNA samples from illegal immigrants that cross the border. The samples would be added to the FBI’s database. On Oct 21, the DOJ issued a proposed rule change that eliminates a 2008 exception given to the DHS that made non-citizens exempt from the Fingerprint Act of 2005. The Fingerprint Act allowed federal agencies to collect DNA samples from individuals who are arrested or detained under U.S. authority.
DNA swabs are taken from illegal immigrants after they cross the border. The FBI database or CODIS contains almost 14 million ‘offender profiles’. CODIS has been very successful in targeting criminals who cross the border illegally and especially roots out people fraudulently ‘ using children’ to gain access into the U.S. Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Mark Morgan, said in July at a hearing on Capitol Hill. the Border Patrol with using DNA testing has identified 5,800 fake families. He said, “It’s very clear they know if you grab a kid, that’s your passport into the United States.”
Transgender Cyclist Rachel McKinnon Dominates, Competitors Raise Questions
Last weekend, transgender cyclist, Rachel McKinnon, while competing at the Masters Track Cycling World Championships, set a world record. She qualified for the 35-39 age category 200-meter sprint. The event was held in Manchester, England. McKinnon a 37 yr old Canadian, went on to defend her title in the 200-meter finals. Her success, however, has been overshadowed by many of her frustrated competitors.
Former cycling champion, Victoria Hood said in an interview with Sky News, “It’s not complicated. The science is there and it says that it is unfair. The male body which has been through male puberty still retains its advantage. That doesn’t go away. I have sympathy with them. They have the right to do sport but not a right to go into any category they want.”
In response, McKinnon said, “ By preventing trans women from competing or requiring them to take medication, you’re denying their human rights,” She also said, “ All my medical records say, female. My doctor treats me as a female person, my racing license says female People who oppose my existence still want to think of me as a male.” She responded that her critics ‘have an irrational fear of trans women.’
Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Wins Tight Election Race
Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party has won elections held in Canada. However, with a minority. Trudeau’s liberal party won by 156 out of 338 seats according to Elections Canada. This put the liberals far short of the 170 seats needed to maintain a majority government.
Trudeau took power in 2015 as a charismatic figure who promised ‘sunny days’. He recently saw his popularity drop when old photos surfaced of him in blackface and disapproval of his handling of a corporate corruption case. He will now have to rely on the New Democratic Party or NDP, to push through any key legislation. Trudeau, 47, has championed diversity during his time as Prime Minister and was endorsed by Barack Obama. Some feel that a liberal government supported by the NDP will likely lean further and further left. It is to be noted that minority governments in Canada rarely last more than 2 and a half years.
