Confirmation of latest Trump Judicial pick tilts the balance of 11th Circuit Court
The Senate has confirmed another of President Trump’s picks to a federal circuit court seat. This will now tip the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to a GOP appointed majority. This is the third court to undergo this transformation under Trump’s Presidency. The Senate confirmed Barbara Lagoa in a vote of 80-15 on Wednesday. The seat was formerly held by Judge Stanley Marcus, a Clinton appointee who has held the seat since 1997. Lagoa is the first Cuban-American woman to be confirmed to the 11th Circuit Court. Trump’s nominees now hold five of the 12 seats on the 11th Circuit.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a speech at the annual Convention for the Federalist Society, “ The reason we’ve done all these circuit judges,, is because there are not many things that we do that cannot be undone by the next election. But there’s not much you can do about a young strict constructionist who’s committed for a lifetime to the quaint notion that maybe the job of a judge is to follow the law. ” He continued, “ My motto for the rest of the year is ‘ leave no vacancy behind’.”
