“The right of the people to keep and bear…arms shall not be infringed. A well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”
Interview with New York State Right to Life Chairwoman Christina Fadden Fitch (5:25)
So, earlier this week, on Jan 22nd The Reproductive Health Act (RHA) (Bill S.240-Krueger/A.21-Glick) was passed in the state of New York. Today we speak with Christina Fadden Fitch from New York State’s Right to Life organization to see what this really means.

This act brings an effect to several things:
First, it repeals existing protections for children born alive following an attempted late-term abortion.
Second, it greenlights late-term, up to the day of birth, abortions “if the fetus is not viable or when abortion is necessary to protect the life of the mother.”
Third, it moves abortion from the Penal Law to the Public Health Law and thus removes abortion from the state’s criminal code to protect doctors or medical professionals who perform abortions from criminal prosecution.
Forth, the law now allows NON-physicians and medical professionals who are NOT doctors to perform abortions in New York.
Fifth, it takes abortion-related crimes off the books in cases where pregnant women miscarry as a result of being assaulted. This gives the perpetrators a free ride on such a heinous crime.
Legalizing abortion up to the date of birth arose the most heated debates. Many argue that even if it’s a tragic case where a mother’s life is at risk if her pregnancy continues, a standard C-section to deliver baby whole and alive would be QUICKER than a full term abortion to save mother’s life.
In addition, there are babies who survive when born at 24 weeks so the medical professionals could still try to save baby too instead of aborting.
