Have you ever wondered what exactly it is that drives someone to leave it all behind and set out on an adventure or attempt the unknown? There certainly are many names that come to mind of heroic men and women who risked their lives and livelihood for a chance to explore or pioneer something or someplace for the first time.

Charles Lindbergh, first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.  

Robert Peary who pioneered the North Pole.



How about Emma Gatewood? Though not as famous as the aforementioned, she nonetheless attempted an almost impossible feat. At the age of 67 Emma or “Grandma,” Gatewood became the first person to hike the Appalachian trail. A hike of over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. Today we hear her story.
