The Tipping Point: Vandals Topple Statues of Washington, Jefferson, Grant
Written by Luis Miguel
It was never just about Confederate statues.
Protesters in northeast Portland vandalized and tore down a statue of U.S. President George Washington late last week, spraying it with phrases such as “f*ck cops” and “Big Floyd.”
The vandals also sprayed the likeness of the nation’s first president with the number “1619,” a reference to the first year slaves were brought to the Virginia colony. Then, in a final act of desecration, they wrapped an American flag around Washington’s head and lit the flag on fire before pulling the statue down with ropes.
The incident took place Thursday as three weeks have passed since the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Department officer. A day earlier, a group of agitators in Portland attempted to establish their own autonomous zone in the city’s Pearl District in imitation of the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) in Seattle.
Portland vandals previously took down a statue of Thomas Jefferson. Left-wing radicals have gone after monuments to the two Founding Fathers because they were slave owners. Ironically, President Trump predicted in 2017 that leftists would set their sights on statues of Washington and Jefferson after first targeting monuments to Confederate leaders.
“Is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?” Trump said in a press conference at Trump Tower in New York City. “You have to ask yourself where does it stop?”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has given into the social-justice crowd currently seeking to stamp out all traces of American history. She called for the removal of Confederacy-related statues and images from the Capitol. In just the past few weeks, activists have destroyed statues of historical figures such as Christopher Columbus and Jefferson Davis.
Leftists have linked these individuals to racism and oppression. But even individuals who were seemingly heroes in the social-justice narrative have had their statues targeted. One of abolitionist Matthias Baldwin was tagged with graffiti.
In San Francisco over the weekend, vandals toppled a statue of former president Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union Army against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Police said there were about 400 people gathered in the mob that took the statute down, but no arrests were made.
In the same park, the crowd took down a statue of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The vandalism took place on “Juneteenth,” a “holiday” nobody heard about until this year that commemorates the last slaves being freed in Texas on June 19, 1865.
In Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh is bowing to demands to remove a statue of Abraham Lincoln freeing a slave, which has been marked as “racist” because the freed slave’s bowing posture allegedly portrays blacks as subservient to whites.
“It says that it’s a statue that’s supposed to represent freedom. But, to me, it represents submissiveness,” said Tory Bullock, who started the online petition to take down the statue.
In St. Augustine, Florida, a Black Lives Matter-aligned pastor led a march to remove a statue commemorating fallen Confederate soldiers at the city’s famed Plaza de la Constitución. Reverend Ron Rawls declared that “violence is on the table.” He previously said that to achieve his ends, “first, we threaten their safety” and “there will be an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”
In California’s Santa Rosa Memorial Park, a fountain dedicated to Holocaust survivors was found toppled to the ground and broken in pieces last week.
As the Press Democrat reports: “The fountain was part of a memorial created for the late Lillian Judd and her husband Emil, beloved figures in the local Jewish community who survived Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Jews visiting the northeast Santa Rosa cemetery used the fountain for ritual washing and cleansing.”
And the movement to erase history has not been limited to the United States. In the U.K., Brexit Party Leader Nigel Farage called Black Lives Matter a “new Taliban” after vandals tore down a statue of 17th-century parliamentarian and philanthropist Edward Colston due to his ties to slavery.
Afghanistan’s Taliban imposed its Islamic fundamentalist culture upon ascending to power, in part, by eliminating traces of pre-Islamic history, such as the world’s tallest-standing Buddhas. The Islamic State likewise destroyed statues in Palmyra, Syria.
“A new form of the Taliban was born in the UK today. Unless we get moral leadership quickly our cities won’t be worth living in,” Farage said of the lawlessness.
Patriots warned from the beginning that the push to get rid of Confederate monuments was nothing more than a way to open the door for a full frontal assault on American history. The Left originally scoffed at the accusations, but now that they have the cover thanks to the George Floyd situation, they feel free to remove the veneer and are unabashed in their intentions.
Remember: The end goal is not merely to erase history. The goal is to replace it with a new history, one in which America, Christianity, and our constitutional Republic are evil, while globalism and socialism are held sacred.
