“No-Bake” Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies From 1960 Workbasket Magazine

This no bake cookies recipe comes from 1960 The Work Basket magazine.The peanut butter oatmeal cookies are delicious and very simple to make. No exotic ingredients required.

I’ve tried this recipe in several variations. To make the one pictured below I added 1/4 cup sliced almonds and 1/4 cup raw unsalted pumpkin seeds. I used ⅓ cup less quick cooking oats to compensate for these additions. Otherwise the cookies might come out a bit hard.

You can also experiment with adding dried fruits of your choice or candied orange peel.


Interesting fact, The Workbasket magazine paid $2 for each recipe they published for the readers “family’s favorite dish published” in the cooking columns in 1960. This recipe was sent to The Workbasket editors by Mrs. Dennis Dyer.


Ingredients to make no-bake peanut butter oatmeal cookies.


3 cups quick cooking oats

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup milk

1 stick margarine or butter

3/4 cup peanut butter


Preparation and cooking steps, as in the original recipe.


Cook hard 1 1/2 minutes, then add quick cooking oats and peanut butter.

Stir thoroughly and drop by teaspoon on wax paper and allow to set until cold.
