“Natural” isn’t the most common word in the world of couture makeup looks. There is though, no better way to describe the makeup we saw at the Chanel finale of the Paris-New York 2018/19 Métiers d’art show revealed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York earlier this month.

The collection presented by Karl Lagerfeld pays homage to Ancient Egypt with rich gold colors, perfect symmetry, enticing textures, and the Temple of Dendur rising in the background. The makeup for the most part was comprised of lightly filled-in brows, Pharaoh-like eyeliner, and a clear mascara for a beautiful, natural looking eyelash line. No fake lashes, no eyelash extensions, or insertions.

Whether or not you decide to go for a bare eyelash look on a daily basis, who would say no to having naturally long, lush lashes? Our human eyelashes need about 5-8 weeks to grow back, and each lash has a life cycle of about six months before falling out naturally. Properly “feeding” your lashes and regularly conditioning them, just like you do with your hair, will result in longer and fuller lashes.

Below are a few tried and proven home remedies that will visibly improve the look of your lashes in as little as 10-14 days. The best part? It only takes 2 min a day and about $12 a year!

Almond use in beauty

Sweet Almond Oil For Eyelash Conditioning.

Pure sweet almond oil is a rich source of Vitamin E, good fat and contains magnesium and calcium. Almond oil moisturizes your eyelashes, encourages growth and increases eyelash strength with regular use. It’s also known to aid in the prevention of hair loss.

How to Use Sweet Almond Oil For Eyelash Growth

Before going to bed, gently and thoroughly remove all eye makeup and wash your face. Dip a clean cotton Q-tip into the oil. First gently sweep it along the eyelid close to the lash line and then across the ends of your lashes to lightly coat the lashes with oil. Don’t over do it and make sure the oil doesn’t drip into your eyes. About one drop should be enough for each eye. Repeat every night.

Note: You can use a clean spoolie brush instead of q-tip. Dip the spoolie into oil, press the spoolie against the oil bottle’s neck to remove the excess oil, allowing the oil to drip back into the bottle. Next, coat your lashes with oil using a downward motion: Slightly close your eye when you coat your upper lashes with the oil, essentially “brushing” the top of your lashes with the oil, going from the lash line towards the end of the lashes. Many people find it simpler to use your own fingers instead of spoolie brush or a q-tip.

Castor oil seeds
Ricinus communis, the castor oil bean

Cold Pressed Castor Oil For Rapid Eyelash Growth

Castor oil is much thicker than almond oil and many people pass on this oil simply because of its seemingly user-unfriendliness. However, castor oil is almost magical in how it promotes hair growth. Castor oil works for eyebrows too. Has a miscommunication with your local eyebrow threading salon ended up with Marlene Dietrich-like eyebrows? (Don’t ask me how I came up with this example) No amount of tears will help here, but a few drops of castor oil and a few days will do the trick.

Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, also known as as castor beans. The oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, omega 6 essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and much more. Translated into eyelash wellness language this means it retains moisture, preventing eyelash breakage, and provides nutrition to hair follicles.

Before going to bed, gently and thoroughly remove all eye makeup and wash your face. Dip a clean cotton Q-tip into the oil (or use clean spoolie brush as described above, or your fingers). First gently sweep it along the eyelid, close to the lash line, then gently sweep the Q-tip across ends of your lashes to lightly coat the lashes with oil, but don’t over do it. Make sure the oil doesn’t drip into your eyes. About one drop should be enough for each eye. Repeat every night.

eyelash serum

K-Cosmetics to the Rescue

This one is not a remedy, but it’s a very easy to use pre-made, clear eyelash serum that doesn’t require a prescription and costs  under $10. You can use this Etude House My Lash Serum on your eyebrows too. I didn’t see much difference when I first applied it a few years back. It was hard to find many descriptions for the product in English back then and I had my doubts as to whether or not I was using it right. However, about a week after applying the eyelash serum, a co-worker asked what mascara I was currently using, as my lashes looked much longer and fuller. I was not using a different mascara and I thought maybe it was the serum actually working. I’ve since experimented with the serum by applying it on my eyebrows and saw a difference within about 10 days.

You can also apply the lash serum on the days you’re not wearing any makeup for a more defined natural eyelash look.
