Google Targets “Racist” BLM Coverage, GOP Rep. Gosar Appeals to Barr

The next wave of Big Tech purges has arrived.

Google cracked down on two right-of-center news and commentary outlets for allegedly racist coverage of the George Floyd riots this week, demonetizing the website ZeroHedge by banning it from the Google ad platform and threatening to do the same to The Federalist, prompting the latter to fall into compliance.

NBC News reported Tuesday that Google banned ZeroHedge from using Google Ads, impairing its ability to earn money from its website traffic.

Google also told NBC that it issued The Federalist a warning, but that the conservative site was given three days to remove the violations before the ban would go into effect. On Wednesday, Google said the Federalist removed the content found in violation of its policies and would take no further action.

“We have strict publisher policies that govern the content ads can run on and explicitly prohibit derogatory content that promotes hatred, intolerance, violence or discrimination based on race from monetizing,” a Google spokesperson wrote. “When a page or site violates our policies, we take action. In this case, we’ve removed both sites’ ability to monetize with Google.”

ZeroHedge notes that the offending articles were not original posts from their staff, but rather op-eds from third-party authors.

“Do we now live in a time when ad platforms will suspend, say, the New York Times for publishing highly controversial Op-Eds?” ZeroHedge asks rhetorically.

The first “problematic” op-ed is one that raises questions about who is funding and organizing the Black Lives Matter riots, suggesting that the CIA, George Soros, and other Deep State elements are behind the unrest.

The second article in question is, ironically, a reprint of a 2016 post originally published here at The New American and authored by C. Mitchell Shaw.

Titled “The Deep (Left) Pockets of Black Lives Matter,” the article looks at the Hungarian-born billionaire’s well-documented series of generous donations to BLM.

Neither of those two op-eds is “racist” unless “racism” is defined as following the money trail behind a current political movement (a definition that used to belong to the word “journalism”). For the Left, that’s the beauty of the “racism” attack — they are the grand arbiters of “racism” and can make it mean whatever they want it to mean. Naturally, they make it mean whatever it is their opponents stand for.

Despite the setback, ZeroHedge states that they are striving to resolve the matter so that their access to Google Ads can be restored.

Google targeted the two websites after it was notified about their content by the British nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate.

The group claims to combat online “hate and misinformation.” Recently, its efforts have been focused on putting pressure on social-media platforms to censor those spreading alleged misinformation about the COVID-19 outbreak. It also claims that individuals and organizations who talk about the socialist ties of Black Lives Matter are supported by foreign actors such as Russia.

Imran Ahmed, founder and CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, blasted sites such as the Federalist and ZeroHedge as purveyors of “white supremacism.”

“We found that lots of those companies are inadvertently funding through their advertising content that is outright racist in defense of white supremacism and contains conspiracy theories about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement,” he said.

Ahmed is also a member of the British government’s Commission for Countering Extremism, led by British Muslim Sara Khan, author of the book The Battle for British Islam.

Other members of the committee include extreme leftists such as former police chief Sir Mark Rowley, who oversaw a massive violent crime increase in London; Islamic activist Yasmin Waljee, OBE; refugee-rights campaigner Councillor Simon Blackburn (Labour Party); and Soros-funded anti-Brexit campaigner Sunder Katwala.

Representative Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) told the National Pulse:

This appears to be a blatant effort to interfere with our U.S. elections by silencing perceived conservative voices to suppress the vote for President Trump and other conservatives.

Such foreign interference by a shady U.K. group has no business in our domestic politics.

I will be asking Attorney General Barr to add Google to the list of subpoena recipients for the ongoing investigation into election interference, censorship and foreign meddling.

The empty, overused and impotent claim of “racism” is a thin pretext to censor opposing views from The Federalist and Zero Hedge, none of which have a history of publishing racist content.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also spoke out on the matter, stating that Google has seven days to hand communications involving its practices over to the Senate Judiciary Committee, as well as answer various questions related to the situation.

Will anything come of these elected officials’ bold declarations? Whether or not it does, non-mainstream outlets would do well to avoid becoming dependent on Google Ads or other Big Tech platforms controlled by the establishment.

Once you put your livelihood in their hands, it’s only a matter of time before they hold it over your head to keep you in line.
