DHS Chief Blasts Portland Democrats for Emboldening “Violent Mob”
Written by Luis Miguel
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf accused Portland’s Democrat leadership of enabling the violent “mob” of rioters and looters that has assaulted federal buildings and kept the city in chaos over the last six weeks, posting a timeline that details the extensive damage “violent anarchists have caused.”
“The city of Portland has been under siege for 47 straight days by a violent mob while local political leaders refuse to restore order to protect their city,” Wolf said in a statement. “Each night, lawless anarchists destroy and desecrate property, including the federal courthouse, and attack the brave law enforcement officers protecting it.”
Wolf then excoriated city politicians who have failed to stop the destruction in over a month and who have rebuked federal officers more severely than they have the actual rioters destroying property.
Local businesses in Portland’s downtown have reported $23 million in losses as a result of rioting and looting, which has included acts of vandalism like setting off fireworks in the streets and lighting mattresses on fire.
To protect the federal buildings, the Department of Homeland Security this month deployed officers from over a half dozen agencies, such as the U.S. Marshals, the Federal Protective Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
A timeline Wolf posted in his statement recounts the destruction provoked by radical left-wing groups in the city, who have attacked officers with hammers, slingshots, fireworks, and other objects.
As described in the timeline, “violent anarchists” on July 10 “attempted to ambush Portland Police Department PD during their shift change, but a DHS team was deployed and able to prevent any attacks.”
The next night, “A law enforcement officer was assaulted with blows from a hammer. Violent anarchists fought officers while they were arresting those responsible.”
Rather than cracking down on the mob, Democrat politicians have sympathized with them while vilifying the feds.
State Senator Ron Wyden wrote to Attorney General William Barr this week complaining about a protester who was hit in the head with crowd control munition.
This politically driven federal response is intolerable,” Wyden stated.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Wolf called on him on Tuesday to talk about the ongoing violence and how the federal government could help. Wheeler’s response was to tweet that federal officers are not needed or wanted in the city and would therefore do well to leave.
In his statement, Wolf sternly censured Democrats’ antipathy.
“A federal courthouse is a symbol of justice – to attack it is to attack America,” he said. “Instead of addressing violent criminals in their communities, local and state leaders are instead focusing on placing blame on law enforcement and requesting fewer officers in their community. This failed response has only emboldened the violent mob as it escalates violence day after day.”
The DHS chief added:
“This siege can end if state and local officials decide to take appropriate action instead of refusing to enforce the law. DHS will not abdicate its solemn duty to protect federal facilities and those within them. Again, I reiterate the Department’s offer to assist local and state leaders to bring an end to the violence perpetuated by anarchists.”
Oregon police chief Chris Davis called the situation unfolding in the city “not sustainable.”
“There’s a very big difference between protests and the kind of mayhem that we’ve seen every night,” Davis said, adding that “The Black Lives Matter movement is not violent. The story that we’re going to talk about today is about a small group of agitators that is attempting to hijack that message [of Black Lives Matter] and use it as a cover for criminal activity.”
Davis is wrong about one thing. Black Lives Matter is a Marxist, revolutionary organization. While not all who participate in Black Lives Matter events are violent, Antifa documents reveal that their tactics to taking control of the streets involve using both violent and nonviolent agents. The nonviolent members of the crowd provide the cover behind which the violent agitators are able to attack the police without fear of reprisal.
