Democrats Subpoena Secretary of State Pompeo for Biden Records
Written by Luis Miguel
Democrats in the House issued a subpoena for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (shown) based on claims that he helped Republicans in the Senate promote conspiracy theories related to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“Secretary Pompeo has turned the State Department into an arm of the Trump campaign and he’s not even trying to disguise it,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel said in a statement.
According to the committee, the subpoena demands receipt of all records related to Biden and the Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings that the State Department produced for the Republican-controlled Senate Committees on Finance, Homeland Security, and Governmental Affairs.
“After trying to stonewall virtually every oversight effort by the Foreign Affairs Committee in the last two years, Mr. Pompeo is more than happy to help Senate Republicans advance their conspiracy theories about the Bidens,” Engel said. “I want to see the full record of what the department has sent to the Senate and I want the American people to see it too.”
The subpoena requires Pompeo hand over all documents by August 7.
A spokesperson for the State Department said the department had a history of accommodating Engel’s “legitimate investigative requests” and accused him of “(ceding) the Committee and its oversight duties to his misguided staff.”
The spokesperson added:
The Department previously addressed Chairman Engel’s staff’s requests for “courtesy copies” of documents produced in response to investigative requests from the Chairmen of the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, as well as their inaccurate assertion that complying with this request would be “consistent with longstanding State Department practice.”
Democrats’ claims that President Trump unfairly looked into Biden’s dealings in Ukraine in order to harm his election rival politically were the basis of last year’s impeachment battle.
President Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to probe the Bidens due to the former vice president’s public admission that he threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees to Ukraine in 2014 if that country’s president did not fire prosecutor Victor Shokin, who was investigating natural-gas company Burisma Holdings at a time when Hunter Biden was on Burisma’s board making over $50,000 a month.
Ukrainian parliamentarian Andrey Derkac has claimed that Biden received $900,000 in lobbying fees from Burisma.
According to Derkach, the money was funneled through the private equity firm Rosemont Seneca Partners, co-founded by Hunter Biden and Christopher Heinz, the stepson of former Secretary of State John Kerry.
“This was the transfer of Burisma Group’s funds for lobbying activities, as investigators believe, personally to Joe Biden through a lobbying company. Funds in the amount of $900,000 were transferred to the U.S.-based company Rosemont Seneca Partners, which according to open sources, in particular, the New York Times, is affiliated with Biden. The payment reference was payment for consultative services,” Derkach said.
The Biden family has been involved in several other questionable business dealings. For example, Hunter Biden has benefited significantly from investment in the Chinese state-backed coal firm Yancoal even though his father has repeatedly taken an anti-coal environmental stance.
There’s also the matter of Joe Biden’s brother, Frank, who scored lucrative business deals involving tens of millions of dollars of U.S. taxpayer-funded foreign aid during the Obama administration.
In one case, Frank Biden’s company Sun Fund Americas landed a deal with the Costa Rican National Power and Light Company (CNFL), even though he did not have any relevant energy-sector experience. Another one of the companies involved in the project, GoSolar, was specifically earmarked for over $6.5 million in taxpayer-backed loans approved by the Obama administration’s Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) in 2015.
As detailed in the book Profiles in Corruption by Peter Schweizer, Frank Biden had numerous business ventures in China, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Russia at a time when Joe Biden was a driving force in American foreign policy in those nations.
Despite the mounting evidence of pay-to-play in Biden’s long public career, the mainstream media continue to call the Trump administration’s claims of wrongdoing by the former vice president “unfounded” and “unsubstantiated.”
Like the impeachment itself, the subpoena of Pompeo is nothing more than an attempt by Democrats to deflect from their misdeeds, projecting their dirty laundry onto the Trump administration.
