The college bribery scandal: How did an FBI operation uncover this million-dollar college scheme?

Using the ‘Side Door’ to Get into College

The recent college bribery scandal was the largest admissions scam ever uncovered by the Department of Justice. Starting in 2011, a group of very rich parents spent a lot of money to get their kids into college. They used money to illegally manipulate the system so that kids get into colleges where they probably wouldn’t make it by themselves. In total, there were 50 people involved in this large-scale fraud. Some of them were business leaders, some were athletic coaches, and some were famous actors.

One of those rich and famous parents is Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky in the ’90s sitcom Full House. Lori Loughlin and her family have become the “faces” of this scandal, but their family is just one of dozens who were a part of the scheme.

The FBI organized a sting called “Operation Varsity Blues” to uncover how these rich parents collectively paid $25 million dollars’ worth of bribes to get their kids into college.
