Apple Pie Contest: Winning Recipe From The PA Farm Show

The Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest indoor agricultural exposition in the nation, runs from this Sat, Jan 5th through Jan 12th. The annual event features nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits, and numerous hands-on activities for everyone to enjoy: From Apple Pie Contest and Army vs Navy Cook-Off to Rodeo, Sheep-to-Shawl competition, Butter Sculptures Reveal, and much more.

2018 Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest Winning Recipe

1st place, Lucinda Donough

To make apple pie crust you will need:

1 ½ cups all purpose flour
2 tbsp shortening
1 ½ tsp sugar
1/3 cup butter
½ tsp salt
4 tbsp ice water

Mix together flour, sugar, and salt. Add butter and blend until looks like course cornmeal. Add the
shortening, blend not quite as much as butter. Add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time until you get a
consistency you prefer for rolling out.

Place in the refrigerator and let rest while you get the rest of the ingredients together.

 

To make apple pie filling you will need:

7 cups sliced apples
1 cup sugar
3-4 ½ tbsp flour (depends on the juice in the apples)
4 tbsp apple juice
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp lemon juice
2 tbsp butter

Combine sugar, flour, salt and mix. Add to apples. Sprinkle in lemon juice and apple juice or cider. Cut
butter into small pieces and add to the filling mixture.

8 oz cream cheese
½ cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
½ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 10 inch unbaked pie shell
1 ¼ cup pecans, chopped

 

To make apple pie topping you will need:

3 Eggs
1 cup light corn syrup
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Cream together softened cheese, sugar, beaten egg, salt and vanilla. Spread over bottom of unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle pecans evenly over cream cheese layer. Combine all topping ingredients and beat
until smooth. Pour over pecan layer. Bake 35-45 minutes at 375 degrees until pecan layer is golden
brown.

 

Add apples and top with:
½ cup pecans, finely chopped
½ cup sugar
¼ cup flour
4 tbsp butter

Combine pecans, sugar, flour. Blend in the butter until you have a crumb mixture. Spread across the
top of the filling. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake an additional 15 minutes.

 

Remove apple pie from oven, let cool, serve, and enjoy!
